A tip for reducing energy emissions during the cooler seasons is to check the sealing of windows and doors. Wool is a fantastic material that has been used for generations to seal windows and doors. This natural material seals against drafts and dust while allowing moisture to escape, letting the house breathe. Unlike other textile fibers, wool is an elastic material that contracts in tight spaces and expands in gaps and cavities. Wool fibers also repel moisture, whereas materials like linen and cotton absorb moisture. This makes wool an ideal material for sealing windows and doors. Modern sealing strips are often made of rubber, which dries and cracks over time, a problem avoided with wool sealing. Wool is also an environmentally friendly option with a significantly longer lifespan.
For windows, only the gap between the inner sash and the frame should be sealed. The outer sash should not be sealed, as some air needs to enter and exit to prevent condensation. The wool cord is easiest to attach with a staple gun or alternatively nailed with small tacks. The wool cord comes in two sizes; 5 mm (suitable for windows) and a wider 8 mm variant (suitable for doors). Additionally, the cord can be reused – just remove it before repainting and reattach it afterward! Find Traditional 100% Wool Sealing Rope here.
